Exchange Permits:
There are two types of exchange
permits provided for under current South African legislation.
1) Cultural,
Economic and Social Exchanges
These permits are
issued for specific programmes between
higher education institutions and government departments or bodies and may be of varying duration.
Conditions regarding a change of status before the expiry of the
permit or within a specific period after the expiry of the permit
may be imposed by the Department of Home Affairs.
2) Under
25s work permit
These permits are granted for
a maximum period of 12 months for a specific position to
be taken up by a foreigner under the age of 25 years. After
the expiry of the permit the holder may not qualify for temporary
or permanent residence until they have spent 2 years outside South Africa. The sectors in which a foreigner
may work are not prescribed by legislation, and there is
no requirement for the employer to advertise the position
locally as is the case with certain other work permits. |
